Birth of the famous streetwear brand: Supreme
Supreme , created in 1994 by James Jebbia , a New Yorker in his thirties, is now recognized throughout the international streetwear community. Initially, it was not planned that Supreme would become an icon of the urban world. Jebbia opened its first boutique in New York, in a small space on Lafayette Street, mainly for skaters. To mark the opening of its store, Jebbia launched three original T-shirts from the brand, simple but emblematic. And there, guess what? These Supreme T-shirts , bearing the famous logo, sold out instantly, outperforming the brand's other skating products. James Jebbia quickly realized he had created something grandiose.
He then diversified the colors of the Supreme Tee Shirts and expanded his product range. The Supreme logo has become popular in skate, hip-hop and rock circles around the world. Exceptional collaborations, notably with Louis Vuitton, Nike , Lacoste and The North Face, have propelled the brand to the top. In 2018, James Jebbia received the award for best men's fashion designer, confirming his status as a renowned designer. Matt Powell, a famous trainers expert, even called Supreme the "Harvard of trainers ", highlighting its influence in the fashion empire.
Today, Supreme has no fewer than 15 stores around the world. Each product release, Supreme clothing or Supreme trainers , is a dazzling success, due to the limited quantity and the high price, placing the brand in the highly coveted luxury segment.
The history of the Supreme logo
Little juicy story: the Supreme logo , this famous “ box logo ”, has caused a lot of ink to flow! Imagine, James Jebbia took inspiration from the American artist Barbara Kruger. His idea ? Mixing the world of art with that of streetwear. Jebbia has never hidden this certain inspiration. But now, when Supreme attacked the founder of Married To The Mob for a logo a little too similar to hers, Barbara Kruger came out of her reserve by calling Supreme a “big joker”. Ironic, since Supreme was initially inspired by her! However, Barbara never wanted to start a legal battle against Supreme for the rights to the Supreme box logo . Apparently, she feared losing against the heavyweight Supreme and, what's more, she didn't have the rights to the typography used... A hell of a mistake in the world of streetwear!
