The Nike Air Max 95 is an iconic shoe from the Nike brand that was first introduced to the market in 1995. It was designed by the famous designer Sergio Lozano and quickly became an icon in the world of trainers . Here is his story.
It all started in… 1994!
Despite its name Air Max 95 , its designer Sergio Lozano began to imagine this future trainer jewel in 1994. New designer for the swoosh brand collaborating on the creation of shoes dedicated to tennis, he was responsible that year for designing a model dedicated to running, a sport on the rise while basketball lost its appeal. His mission was to create a running shoe that would combine style and performance to regain the interest of running enthusiasts in the Beaverton firm.
Lozano then began to think and began to draw inspiration from soil erosion caused by rain. He made a first sketch with striations similar to those found in the Grand Canyon. Same inspiration as Salehe Bembury for the creation of the New Balance 2002R Peace Be The Journey . However, this first design of the AM 95 did not please Nike .
The designer therefore racks his brain a little more and finally finds his answer in anatomy books, attracted by the correlation between the construction of the human body and the design of the product. The Nike Air Max 95 for men therefore takes its appearance from the ribs, vertebrae, muscles, and skin of the human body. The Nike team is not convinced of this design. However, Lozano, motivated by his admiration for Tinker Hatfield, the famous designer of the Jordan 4 , from the Air Jordan line, sees his project through to the end.
The first pair of Air Max 95 women's trainers was released in 1995 in gray, black and neon tones, and displayed a layering of materials on its upper, which still makes this pair of Nike sneakers unique today. Sergio Lozano took doubly risks since the color gray was not very popular on shoes at that time. However, it will be a winning bet for the Nike firm , because this model will be an immediate success upon its release, and remains almost 30 years later, one of the most popular models from the trainer leader among sneakerheads.
